2007 (Jim) St. Malachi 5 Miler- 03/11/2007 - Went out too hard. First mile in 5:15. Second mile in 5:20. Winded. Had to slow down. Next 3 at 6:15, 6:04, and 5:56. I just don't have the turnover right now to hold that pace. (Jim) Catch a Leprechaun 20K- 03/04/2007 - Good race. Bad weather. Ran with Matt Young through 8. Picked it up from 9 to 12. Fell on the ice just after 12. Stopped and walked back to the start. First DNF! (Jim) Bank of America Half Marathon - 02/18/2007 - The crappy weather likes to follow me. Got up at 4am to drive to Tampa from Kevin's house. Rained until we reached Tampa. Plan was go hard for first 5K then back off. Ran according to plan. First 5K in 16:52. Interesting to run with the Kenyans. The were pretty chatty for the first three miles...although I didn't understand a word they said. Backed down from mile 3.1 to 5. Picked it back up and finished in 1:22:10. Good to see I can run tired. (Jim) Last Chance for Boston Half Marathon - 02/11/2007 - 8 degrees at start time. A 1 mile loop course on a road. The "running" lane was about 10 feet wide. So once you get 500+ runners going on this thing, it was all about weaving through a crowd. Ended up in 2nd overall. My GPS had me at 13.3 miles which I believe because I was running way on the outside from time to time to pass people. Averaged 6:11 per mile which is a good sign for this time of the year. 2006 USATF National XC Club Championships - 12/09/2006 - Great running venue at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco. Over 500 of the best Masters Runners (40 years old and over) showed up. Food poisoning a week before the race spoiled any chances I had to do well. Got out to a good start with a 5:28 first mile. Hit mile 2 in 11:10 and knew I was done. Dropped from our 4th man to our 8th man within the next mile. Motivated for next year. Had a blast running this race. Finished in 158th place.....so I still beat over 340 people. Home Run for the Homeless 4 miles - 11/23/2006 - Still running on tired legs, but very happy with the effort. 1st Masters Runner earned me a clock and a turkey. First mile too fast in 5:05. Gonna hit San Fran fresh. Fall Classic 5K - 11/19/2006 - Tired legs from the week. Couldn't get them to move any faster. Mostly happy with the run. Very cold day. Team Good River Time Trial 6K - 11/12/2006 - Muddy mud, slippery turns and banks, cold. Ran well. Finished just ahead of Pelligrino, Ron, and Scott. Maybe they weren't going all out....but it felt good to out kick them. Nice boost as I get ready for Club Nats. Columbus Marathon - 10/15/2006 - Great day for a marathon. Clear skies and cold at the start. 3,700 in the half, 3,700 in the full. Ran my plan. Felt great and relaxed for the first 18 miles. Left quad tightened up really bad at 19. Had to stop and stretch. Tried to rub out the pain. No luck. Last 6 miles quad just plain hurt. Goal was 2:45. I know it is there, just not today. Still a PR. 37th overall. Masters winning time was 2:44:58. Rats!!! I was there. Oh well. More importantly I know I can go faster. Boston is the next marathon target. Taking a week off then jump into cross country speed training to get ready for the USATF National Club Cross Country Championships in San Fransisco.

Akron Marathon Relay - 09/30/2006 - Windy conditions. I had the first 10K leg for our team. Ran a good 36:31. Couldn't have done much better because of the weather. Our team finished 1st overall with a 2:29:51. Natatorium 5K - 09/23/2006 - Not as fast as the past, but a good race. Goal was to simply defend my title and win. Fast first mile in 5:15. Backed off and held on. Challenged at mile 2. Ducked behind the leader then busted up the hill before mile 3 and build a 10 second gap. 3rd win in a row. Perfect 10 Miler - 08/20/2006 - Terrible race. Super heavy legs. Tried to stay at 5:50 pace but couldn't lift my feet off the ground. Still ran a 10 mile PR, so I shouldn't complain. Splits of: 5:37 / 5:51 / 5:49 / 5:56 / 6:25 / 6:18 / 6:09 / 6:25 / 6:33 / 6:13 Classic at Mastick - 08/09/2006 - A good cross country race. Ran really well. Botched finish organization. Estimated finish time around 17:25. Wadsworth 4 Miler - 06/23/2006 - A warm and muggy night for the 4 miler. Felt pretty good considering the time off and lack of speed work. Course markings were incorrect...so I won't post my splits. Good effort. Jeff Cipriano caught and passed me towards the end. No leg turnover. Cleveland Marathon - 05/21/2006 - All of my training came crashing down at mile 19.5 today. Really prepared for this race and felt amazing. Great pacing with John Paull and last years overall winner Fred Kieser as we ran together for the first 17 miles. Slid ahead of Fred and John....then passed the 30K mark in 1:54:35 (6:15 average pace at that point). Right hip pinched hard and hurt. Tried to stretch and alter my stride...which failed. Limped home the last 6 miles in 8:03 pace. Crap. Positives...new marathon PR 2:56:31. Felt great most of the race. I know I can crack 2:45. Here are my splits and photos (click to enlarge).
Jeep Davis 5K - 05/14/2006 - One of my favorite races. Cool and damp morning race. Felt good coming into this as part of my taper. Ran strong with no mental or physical lapses. Miles were 5:13, 5:30 (10:43), 5:33 (16:16)...then another 0.2 miles for a 17:20 5K+0.1. The course was long. I had my 5K at 16:49/50. I am taking it! Course distance verified by 2 other GPS units. Finished 7th overall with the top 7 getting awards. Boston Marathon - 04/17/2006 - First Boston. Great experience. Had a blast. Good training run for Cleveland. Ran even for the first 15 miles. Started to bring it down. Right foot started to hurt....went numb...then on fire. Backed it down for the last 4.
Cleveland Spring Classic Half Marathon - 04/08/2006 - Very good day. Adult PR (actually I should count this as an official PR because my 1:18:00 in 1980 was marked off by a Ford LTD Wagon). Felt relaxed for 6, focused from 7 to 9, Ron paced me in the rest of the way. Difficult mile 11 with heavy winds and I stopped twice with a side stitch. Rubbed it out. Here are my splits: 5:57 / 5:42 / 5:54 / 5:49 / 5:49 / 5:54 / 5:51 / 5:55 / 5:52 / 5:58 / 5:47 / 6:20 / 5:50 / 0:41 (5:15 pace) Canal Park 5K - 04/01/2006 - Man the 5K is tough. I can hold the pace but no leg speed. Finished in 17:28. 9th place overall / 2nd age group. Catch a Leprechaun 15K - 03/05/2006 - A surprise race in the schedule. Ran with a training goal of around 6 min pace. Cold morning again. Ran with Ron Dorfeld and Fred Kieser for the first 5-6 miles, going a little fast so I backed off. Finished in 56:46. 3rd place overall. My new 15K PR. Last Chance for Boston Half Marathon - 02/26/2006 - Another wonderful 11 degree race with wind. Actually only running the first 10 at marathon pace as a workout so my pain was not bad as everyone else running the full 26.2. Crazy race. A 1 mile loop course on a road. The "running" lane was about 10 feet wide. So once you get 500+ runners going on this thing, it was all about weaving through a crowd. Ended up in 4th overall (surprised). Ran the first 10 @ 6:14 pace then cooled down the final 3.1. Logan did take 1st place in the 19 and under division with a 1:36:55. Very proud of him. West End Chili Bowl 5K - 02/18/2006 - 11 degrees with 20 mph head winds and blowing snow. Not much fun. Wanted to run behind someone, but no one wanted to lead. I did. Led through 2 miles, got passed by a kid at 2.5 miles, caught him but another caught both of us. Ended up third in 17:55. Very happy considering the conditions. Ran mile 2 with my eyes closed. Splits were 5:31, 5:54, 5:45. 8 seconds behind the winner. Running 2005 USATF National XC Championships - 11/19/2005 - What a cool event. Running with the best runners in the United States. Results Here. Photos Here. Walsh Turkey Trot 5K - 11/13/2005 - Wanted to test out Logan's spikes before I ran in NY. Felt pretty good. Clearly don't have leg speed. Tired after hard week. 18:22 for 5th overall. Columbus Marathon - 10/16/2005 - Here is my Columbus Marathon Recap - Great 17 miles right on pace. Felt perfect. Started to cramp during mile 17. Tightened up badly, legs in pain, and couldn't hang on after that. Short story: Miles 1-17 average pace: 6:20. Miles 18-26.2 average pace 8:01. Final time 3:01:23 Long story: I really did a good job of drinking lots of water leading up to the race. Felt confident going into Sunday. Saw many people at the expo which was great. Even Jeff Galloway recognized me and said hello. Walked to the starting area and saw Eric along with a few friends. Really kept control during the run once the gun went off. Enjoyed all of the crowds, water stations, entertainment. First 17 miles went as follows: 6:27 / 6:36 / 6:14 / 6:24 / 6:41 / 6:10 / 6:03 / 6:20 / 6:18 / 6:08 / 6:17 / 6:20 / 6:19 / 6:22 / 6:21 / 6:17 / 6:27 About halfway into mile 18 my left hamstring got really tight. I tried to alter my stride to see if I could relax my leg. Bad news...I quickly cramped up both legs and could barely move them. Miles 18 to 26 looked like this: 7:09 / 8:31 / 7:52 / 7:57 / 7:45 / 7:54 / 8:09 / 8:00 / 8:48. I felt like I was running with rubberbands as legs. Stopped at miles 23 and 26 to shake out my legs. Almost lost my balance at 23. I had mixed emotions at the end. I did end up 95th out of 3700+ people...so I can't complain too much. I didn't get close to my goal....so I was upset. On to the next race! Falls Natatorium 5K - 09/25/2005 - Back on track with my training. Ran the first mile at a faster pace to see who would come along, but was alone from the start. Second mile at a comfortable pace then I backed off the final - with another workout ahead of me later that night. 1st overall in 17:35. First race with Jo. Very cool. River Run Half Marathon - 09/11/2005 - Allergies got the best of me today. First 6 miles at a comfortable 5:50 pace, last 7.1 miles of hacking, snot, spit, and no oxygen for my legs. Ending time of 1:25:47 for my best time on this course. Carribean Cruise 5K - 08/13/2005 - A schedule conflict prevented me from running the Perfect 10 miler, so I jumped into this race the day before. A little tired going into it. Ran as well as I could expect. Splits of 5:21 / 5:36 / 5:36 / 0:35 for 4th overall in 17:19. Winking Lizard Shot in the Dark 2 Mile - 07/30/2005 - Teamed up with Ron Dorfeld for the 2 mile relay. Felt great all week so I hoped for a good run. Gun went off and I jumped to the lead right away. Kept the pressure on. Hit the first mile in 4:57 and still out front. Headed around Jacobs Field then around the Gund. Ron caught me in the final stretch. My 2nd mile came in at 4:55 for a total of 9:52. Got my picture in the Cleveland Plain Dealer which was pretty cool. View photo here. Jonnycake Jog 5 Mile - 07/24/2005 - Difficult race after a difficult week. My legs felt like logs and I knew well before the first mile that I would be slow. 29:10 after a 5:22 1st mile then lots of 5:57's after. Jackson Night Glow 5K - 07/15/2005 - Decided to jump into a race totally off schedule. Very humid and dark. Ran a 17:29 which is about my fastest at this point. Thought I could go faster...but maybe not. Sticking with my marathon plan! Wadsworth Match Stick 4 miler - 06/24/2005 - Hot hot hot. Lost 1 pound just thinking about the race. Ran well...not great...but pretty darn good. Primary objective was to run as even as possible and win the Masters division. Ended up 8th overall and stuck with the college guys for most of the race. Fell off a bit during the last mile...but lots of space between me and the guy behind me (Jeff Gantz). I give this day an A- Jim Klett 10K - 06/18/2005 - I would rather soon forget this day. Didn't feel very well before the race....but went on with it anyway. First 2 miles were OK and under control (5:22 and 5:47). Got nauseous around 2.5 to 3. Tried to hang in there (5:59). Really took a dive from 3 to 4 (6:29). Took some water just after mile 4...crossed the covered bridge...threw up. I was done. Mile 5 was out of place (7:25) and I struggled home to 6 (6:10). Final time of 38:27. Akron Childrens Hospital Miracle Mile - 06/05/2005 - I decided to jump in this race just to test my "tired leg speed". I ran 16 with the group earlier in the morning. Very few people in the race. You had to be able to run under 7 minutes to enter. I jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Finished 1st in 4:46.3, which is my second fastest mile ever. Course was accurate. Cleveland Marathon - 05/22/2005 - Perfect training. Poor race execution. Very happy for my first marathon, but could have and should have run a better race. Ran the first 10 way too fast and crashed at 16.5. Struggled for the final 10 miles. Good lessons learned today. I am giving this race a GREEN rating since I qualified for Boston. Here are my splits: Flying Pig Half Marathon - 05/01/2005 - I ran the best race of my adult life today. Toured the course on Saturday. Threw out my time goal based on the nasty continuous hill climb from mile 6 to 9. Kept my 1st Masters goal. Started easy and saved my strength for the hill climb. Found I had gas left at the top. Cranked it down the final 5K. Ended up in 5th place overall, which was great because they gave overall awards to the top 5! (4,235 runners in the half). Here are my splits: 5:57 / 5:57 / 5:59 / 5:52 / 5:52 / 6:12 / 6:35 / 6:23 / 6:03 / 6:09 / 5:49 / 5:59 / 5:49 / 0:35 = 1:19:19 Bogsucker 5K - 04/17/2005 - Rick asked me to jump in a 5K to test my leg speed. Good morning for a race. Had to really search to find a 5K. Ran well. Interesting course. 1 mile downhill....1 mile flat on a bike path....1 mile back uphill (with a head wind). Felt great almost the whole way. Got winded with about 1/2 mile to go. Very happy with my time considering I have not done any real speed work. Here is the damage: 5:02 / 5:26 / 5:42 / 0:35 = 16:46. Good to be under 17 for my first 5K of the year. Course distance is legit (always a bonus). Cleveland Spring Half Marathon - 04/09/2005 - My race didn't go as planned. I felt great for the first 7 miles....then I ran out of gas. Looking back on the week I think my Monday run....then Wednesday workout took a toll. The good news is that I basically ran two half marathons below 6:09 pace this week. The bad news is I was hoping to PR. I will now shoot for the Flying Pig as a PR half. Here are my splits: 5:50 / 5:54 / 6:16 / 5:44 / 5:56 / 5:58 / 6:20 / 6:20 / 6:24 / 6:17 / 6:15 / 6:13 / 6:15 / 0:37 = 1:20:24 Shamrock 15K - 03/13/2005 - First race of 2005. Overall I am very happy with the result. I ran faster than last year on a longer course. I have a much larger base this year but no real speed work...so I am happy with the pace. My only concern was getting a bad side stitch around mile 6. I just couldn't shake it. It even hurt during the cool down. Here are my splits: 5:42 / 5:55 / 5:52 / 5:51 / 6:40 / 6:23 / 6:25 / 6:16 / 6:26 / 1:49 Running 2004 Great New Years Eve 5K 12/31/04 - OK....really the last race of the year. This is a fun and challenging course and it is good to support our running club. Ran a 17:41 which was 1:12 faster than last year. Good leg strength and wind, but not much pep in the legs. Cleveland Fall Classic Half Marathon 11/21/04 - Last race of the year. Very pleased with my effort. Didn't really train for the half....just sort of ran through it. I had my 2nd fastest and clearly most comfortable race. Stayed with a small pack of runners including Brad Ingram and Debbie Kilpatrick through about 7 miles. Feet really started to hurt around 9 miles. Cruised the last three in slow. Here are my splits. 5:44 / 5:41 / 6:14 / 5:46 / 6:07 / 5:49 / 5:57 / 6:12 / 6:13 / 6:06 / 6:20 / 6:32 / 6:21 / 0:35 for a final time of 1:19:42. Overall had a good year and I am looking forward to new things in 2005. Youngstown Peace Race 10K - 10/24/04 - Clearly my best overall race this year. It seemed my training came together today. Tried to run a smart race. Got really tired after the 5 mile mark, but kept pushing. Ended up with an adult PR of 34:46 (5:36 per mile). Here are my splits / elapsed time / pace: 5:14 (5:14, 5:14), 5:28 (10:42, 5:21), 5:40 (16:22, 5:27), 5:36 (21:58, 5:29.5), 5:48 (27:46, 5:33), and the last 1.2 miles: 7:00 (34:46, 5:36). I also ran PR's for 4 and 5 miles within this race. Crystal Clinic 5K - 10/09/04 - I had originally planned on doing a two mile / one mile time trial. I felt that my Akron Marathon leg didn't really tell me how fit I was. I jumped in this 5K and set a PR. Felt really good for most of the race. Ran even split miles. 5:24 / 5:20 / 5:20 / 0:34. Finished in 3rd overall. Road Runner Akron Marathon Relay - 10/02/04 - What a great event. It was really fun to be on a team again. We ran pretty much as expected. I had the 4th leg - a 5K. Got the baton from Ben and shot out quickly. First mile in 5:05. Way too fast! Slowed down and tackled the hill climb. 2nd fastest 5K leg in our division. Final time of 18:16 seems slower....and it was a little (stopped to pee)...but no one ahead of me....no one behind me. Fun day. Falls Natatorium 5K - 09/19/04 - Good race today. Ran very even paced splits. Ed was the only one near me, but after about 1/2 mile I didn't hear him. Course was rolling with a couple of nice steady climbs. Here are my splits: 5:32, 5:32, 5:41, 0:33. Bobby Crim 10 Miler - 08/28/2004 - Large group travelled to Flint Michigan for this race. Weather was muggy and wet. Storms delayed the start by 1/2 hour. Felt great the first three miles, started to cramp up past 4. Tanked the rest of the way. Going to do better next year! Buckeye Trail 50K (two person relay) - 07/31/2004 - Ed and I teamed up to run the Buckeye Trail. Each leg was just over 16 miles. It rained all night long the night before so the course was very muddy and slippery. Ed ran a great 2:10 for the first half. I took off in 4th overall and eventually caught 2 of the 3 people ahead of me. Very difficult terrain, muddy hills up and down, crossed two creeks with water up to my waist, only fell once. My split was 2:13 inspite of the heavy downpour I had to run through. Great experience....will think twice about it next year. Park to Park Half Marathon - 07/25/2004 - Decided to jump in a half marathon for my 12 mile workout @ pace. Goal was to hit between 6:10 and 6:20 miles, hopefully running with someone to keep me on pace. Started the race and was in the lead after the first half mile. No one to run with! Hit the mile in 5:43 feeling good and immediately backed it down. Hit the two mile in 6:30 and felt I was dragging. Ran the rest of the race at a comfortable pace, hovering just above and below 6:00 pace. First race victory. Blew away my adult personal best with a 1:18:47 (just off my all time PR). Here are the splits: M1: 5:46 (5:46) / M2: 12:17 (6:30) / M3: 18:04 (5:46) / M4: 24:08 (6:04) / M5: 29:41 (5:33) / M6: 35:37 (5:55) / M7: 41:36 (5:59) / M8: 47:51 (6:14) / M9: 53:47 (5:56) / M10: 59:54 (6:06) / M11: 1:06:06 (6:12) / M12: 1:12:25 (6:19) / M13: 1:18:14 (5:49) / M13.1: 1:18:47 (0:33) Winking Lizard 4 Mile Relay - Men's Division - 07/17/2004 - Ran a two mile leg with Craig Melzer in Cleveland. Big crowd. Over 2,000 entered. Took off and led the entire race for about 3/4 of the first mile. Three guys passed me and I hung on their shoulders. Three of us hit the mile turn around point around 5:00. Kept a hard pace on the way back. Probably between 5:15 and 5:18. Came around the last corner and I saw the finish line clock was at 9:00. Course was short. Finished in 9:18....I am counting it as a 10:17 or 18. I finished 3rd overall and Craig was 4th overall. We won as a team! Sweetheart Run 5K - Men's Division - 07/10/2004 - Good chance to break 17 minutes but fell short. Went out strong with Chip and hit the mile in 5:08. Lost ground as we hit the second loop. Jeff passed me on the downhill around 1.5. Just lost my drive after that. Hit the two mile mark in 10:44. Struggled the last mile in 5:40 and ended in 17:09. Tough race mentally for me. Stow Parks 3K Run - 07/05/2004 - The race was advertised to be a 2 mile fun run, but ended up being a 3K double loop course. Started off right on plan and was able to hold the pace both downhill and uphill. Felt strong pretty much the entire time. Really worked the up hill sections. They didn't have a mile split time but I am pretty sure I was even paced the entire time. I finished first in 9:41 (5:11 pace). Jim Klett 10K - 06/19/2004 - Started off right on plan but fell apart around 3.5 miles. Wicked side stitch did me in. I need to find out what is making this happen. Got angry after passing the 5 mile mark and picked it back up. Very strong 3/4 mile to the end. M1: 5:32 (5:32) Kent Golden Mile - 06/17/2004 - Ran a very even race I think. I will have the splits tomorrow. Clearly a PR for me. I hate to say this but I think I could have given more on lap 3....but I really tried to run a consistant race. Good race to roll into the 10K on Saturday. 1: 1:12 1:11.05 Tallmadge Memorial 5K - 05/31/2004 - Race number two in as many days. Ran better than I thought. Ran out of steam around mile 2.5, but hung in there. Almost a PR! Here are my splits: 5:29 / 5:23 / 5:36 / 0:43 Zoar Five Miler - 05/30/2004 - Ran about a minute slower than last year. Felt light on my feet for the first 3 miles. Developed a bad side stitch around 3.3 and couldn't shake it. Still there during my cool down. Race was good. Weather was great with a slight headwind and rising temperatures Came in 8th overall but captured the 1st place Masters Men award - very nice two pairs of runners sun glasses. Here are my splits: 5:27 / 5:41 / 5:40 / 6:14 / 5:55 Jeep Davis 5K - 05/08/2004 - Not a bad race today. I wish I could have run faster than last year....but oh well. Came in 8th overall but captured the 1st place Masters Men trophy. Another nice day to run. Here are my splits: 5:25 / 5:32 / 5:45 / :40. Run 4 Life - 05/01/2004 - I quit during this race. A tough week of training combined with no rest. I went out too fast at 5:15 for the first mile, hung on during the second mile at 5:38, then died. On to the next race. Run smarter next time. Cleveland Marathon & 10K - 04/25/2004 - I had three goals for this race. 1 - run my best, 2 - run faster than last year, and 3 - be in the top 3 of the Masters division. I hit 2 of the 3. My time was slower with a tougher course and severe wind. I did run as hard as I could. My first race winning money! Wadsworth 4 miler - 04/17/2004 - I finally ran a good steady race today. I ran about 1 minute and 40 seconds faster than last year. Really held back and tried not to get caught up in the first mile. Went by the 1 mile mark in 5:33. Second mile picked up the pace and went through 2nd mile in 5:21. Started into the hills after two miles. The third mile clocked at 5:50. Picked it back up and fought my fatigue. Ran the last mile in 5:33. Overall I was very happy. Canal Park 5K - 04/03/2004 - I had hoped (cough) to have a good one (cough) here, but my lingering (cough) cold just wouldn't let any air into my lungs. It's amazing how your legs can feel great and the lack of oxygen can shut you down. On to Wadsworth! Strongsville 5K - 03/21/2004 - First race of the Ohio Challenge Series. First day of Spring. Snow and very windy....up to 30 mph. Felt pretty good. First mile in 5:25. Second mile at 5:58 - mostly uphill. Ran by myself for the most part. Not as fast as I wanted...but pretty satisfied with the effort. Shamrock 15K - 03/07/2004 - First race of 2004. Overall a good effort. Had a tough week of training leading up to today. Went out at a good pace with the leaders. Fell off after 4 miles but settled into a decent uphill pace. Beat my goal time by 2 min 20 seconds. First good step towards my 10K goals. M1: 5:44 / M2: 5:38 / M3: 5:32 / M4: 5:50 / M5: 7:38 / M6: 6:25 / M7: 6:31 / M8: 6:21 / M9: 6:18 / M9.3: 1:40 Running 2003 First Night Akron 5K - 12/31/2002 - Ran a nice workout/tempo run/race. I ran the first mile too fast...but truly felt I was at 6:15 pace. Felt great and easy through 1. Backed off from mile 1 to mile 2. Tried to get back to my target 2 mile time. Again...felt at ease and in control. Not really tired. Hit mile 2 and took off. Caught several people and really made up a large gap between Mick and myself. Felt really good, but was pretty beat by the end. Last .5 mile was all uphill. Here are the splits: M1: 5:40, M2: 6:00, M3: 5:51, M3.1 18:11. Averaged 5:51 per mile. My heart rate monitor slid down to my waist after 1 mile. West End Chili Bowl 5K - 2/15/2003 - Very nice race this morning. Cold wind in our face and at times a little strong. Wore my tights, long sleeve turtle neck, hat and gloves. I felt good for the first 2 miles then had to tough it out the last. Here are my splits: Shamrock 15K - 03/09/2003 - I should have known. I should not have run. I have learned a valuable lesson, it's only 1 race. The flu did me in. Felt perfect and comfortable for 3 miles...then the lungs went. After the lungs...the energy went. If it hadn't have been for my training, there is no way I could have finished. Chalk this one up as a learning experience. M1: 5:51 Wadsworth 4 miler - 04/12/2003 - Funny how things work out. I probably should have run faster, but I was really happy with my race today. Two goals: 1) to be under 24:00 from last year and 2) stay with the leaders as long as possible. I went out fast...but felt great and comfortable through 1.5 miles. Quickly got tired, so I backed off alot. Finished in 23:54. I will go for even paced at Rite Aid in two weeks. Rite Aid 10K - 04/27/2003 - Had a good one today. Two big victories. First, I was able to beat my goal time. Second, I had a brief moment of wanting to stop....but fought off the feeling and actually picked up the pace. Here are my splits... 5:40 / 5:52 / 5:57 / 6:07 / 5:46 / 5:39 / 1:07 Jeep Davis 5K - 05/10/2003 - Good 5K today. The weather was pretty bad with heavy rain and wind, but settled down as race time approached. Went out at a good pace passing the mile in 5:23. Felt relaxed as we went into mile 2. Saw Chip and Al up ahead of me....caught up with Chip and Jeff Gantz. Stayed right behind them until we passed the 2 mile mark in 10:57 (5:34 split). Once we hit the stretch toward the lake, I picked it up and tried to catch Al. Put a little room between myself and Chip / Jeff. Al picked it up and I couldn't quite get him. Passed the 3 mile mark in 16:27 (5:30 split). Finished the race at 17:01. Next time I will pick up mile 2 and duck under 17:00. Zoar 5 Miler - 06/01/2003 - I was worried going into this race, feeling out of sync all week. Ran a very good race. Beat my goal time by 34 seconds and improved from last year by 2:42. Felt good through three miles. Tried to stay with Jeff Gantz, but he put on a surge and I couldn't stay with him. I ran in 6th place until the 4.5 mile mark, where I passed the 5th place guy. I ended up 20 seconds ahead of him. Here are my splits: 5:21 / 5:35 / 5:26 / 5:50 / 5:42. Stopped to take water at the 3.5 mile mark, then picked it back up. Jim Klett 10K - 06/21/2003 - Felt great at mile 1 and 2, pulled my right calf muscle around 2.5 mile mark. Had to walk / stretch / light jog the rest of the way in. My splits tell the story! 5:18 / 5:37 / 6:24 / 6:29 / 7:13 / 6:19 / 1:15. Very disappointed, but on to the next race! North Canton 5 Miler - 07/04/2003 - Hot and humid day today. First mile in at 5:35. I quickly realized that I was not in racing shape! Lumbered through the rest of the race. I am adding training miles, but no track or speed work.....and it showed. Fall of 2003 - What a drag it is getting old. I had two injuries that have ended my racing season. I tore my Plantar Facia during the River Run Half Marathon. Came to a crawl around mile 4.5. Limped in the rest of the way. Then on September 23rd I had emergency kidney stone surgery that has put me on the sideline for the Fall season. Homerun for Homeless 4 miler - 11/27/2003 - First post injury race. Felt good. Ran at about 90% effort on a tough course. Finally feeling my speed coming back. Splits were 5:19 / 5:37 / 6:12 / 5:58. Very happy at this point of the year to run like that. Great New Years Eve Race 5K - Ran a dumb race today. Warmed up by running the course probably too fast. Ran another 2 with Ed warming up. Ran the first mile @ 5:19 which was no big deal based on my Homerun split. Ran out of gas just after that and coasted in at 6:30 pace. Punished myself with another 2 cooldown. Actually got in more miles which is a good thing. Fun race and good to see everyone again.
